Artist Statement by Sonia Elphick
‘Every portrait that is painted with feeling is painting of the artist and not the sitter’.
1. Oscar Wilde.
Painting is my joy but sharing my art will be my challenge. I am fumbling my way through this journey. I’m feeling all the discomfort of baring my soul. I’m coming out from the shadow.
Painting has given me pride, passion and incentive. I persevere through life’s challenges endeavouring to improve and expand my knowledge and skillset with every mark. I love the ‘magic’ a line colour or brushstroke can create – the form, the layers, and texture, it’s all an adventure. The initial images I’ve worked from, were chosen for their indifference, but subsequent paintings permeate my sentiment across the canvas. A large strong painting when successful, excites and inspires me to go further. I want to extend my journey and continue searching for the magic that eludes me.
My paintings are big, they can’t be ignored.
I’m fortunate to have found painting in my life. The enjoyment and adventure, the power of self-discovery. Its valuable to find an interest that consistently surprises and reinforces, questions, my self-belief.
